Who is Duffy the Disney Bear?

Greetings Mousekateers!

Today, a friend of mine asked a very good question on my Facebook page. She asked "Whats the deal with Duffy the teddy bear? Where did Disney come up with him - or is he just from something Disney that I am not aware of? I don't get it. ( hmm....blog post possibility...... ;))". So, for everyone who may not be aware, here's the story of Duffy!

"You see, awhile ago, Mickey was about to set sail on an adventure to visit friends around the world. Minnie made a special gift to keep Mickey company and she presented it to Mickey in a duffle bag. Mickey, delighted with his gift, pulled out the gift, a very special bear, and named him Duffy. Mickey and Duffy embarked on many special voyages and Duffy got to meet all of Mickey’s friends. Each time they returned home, Mickey and Duffy would share their stories and photos with Minnie. While on their travels, Duffy and Mickey landed at Tokyo Disney Sea where they have been meeting and greeting fans for the past few years.
Duffy is not just your typical stuffed bear – he’s Mickey’s bear and he resembles his owner. Duffy’s face is shaped like Mickey’s, he has Mickey heads on his paws, and he has a very unique birthmark on his hip. There is no question who he belongs to."

Duffy can be seen at all Disney parks now. He's currently meeting and greeting guests in Epcot at various locations, so be sure to grab the day's schedule at the information kiosk directly inside the Epcot gates.

So what do you think about the newest Disney character? Will you be buying a Duffy during your next visit? Leave a comment to let me know what you think!

  1. So, I like the story....but it seems kind of forced. Like Disney felt like they needed a teddy bear character so they made one up. Also, I realize that he is a new character but he is EVERYWHERE in the gift shops. Especially at EPCOT - which makes sense for the story.

Yes, it is a cute cuddly bear that I'm sure kids are attracted to. I just don't get it.

  2. Agreed. I've got to be honest with you- I'm not in love with this. I think Disney is trying to find ways to reconnect younger audiences with the Fab 5, and maybe Duffy is a great connector. I'm not sure this was the right way to go. I'm personally not a fan, but I can see the allure for young guests to get one and take it with them as they take photos around the park (thereby marketing to all of their friends and family when showing off their vacation pics). I'm with you though- this is something we'll be passing by on our next trip.
